Christmas Around The World

Worldwide, 25th of December 2009

From religious festival to largest annual economic stimulus for many nations. Christmas has had a long history and many changes have happened so far. In general, Christmas Day is an annual holiday celebrated on the 25th of December that commemorates the birth of Jesus. The primary purpose of Christmas was to celebrate the incarnation of Jesus. Nowadays Christmas is much criticized for being over-commercialized. The festival cannot be imagined without holiday include gift-giving, church celebrations, Christmas tree, lights, mistletoe and other attributions. Still, it is seen as a family time and the festival of giving.

Santa Claus is an integral part of Christmas. He is a link between two worlds: traditional and the fantasy. Santa Claus is also a symbol of justice and giving. This character was first recorded in early 17th century, in England. According to legend, Santa lives at the North Pole and manages a toy workshop run by elves. Therefore, it is considered to be the owner and operator of the largest toy manufacturing company. Even though, Santa Claus is said to be fictional, his importance is of great significance.

Every country seems to have a different ways and traditions of celebrating Christmas. In USA the Christmas gifts are put in Christmas stockings. In India people decorate their houses with strings of mango leaves. In Russia Babushka - a mysterious woman - is the one who distributes presents to children. Nevertheless these small differences exit, the spirit of Christmas is the same.

It is said that Christmas is all about giving. But sometimes, the best Christmas gifts are not the material ones. Christmas is all about being together with our loved ones, caring, sharing and keeping the miracle alive in all of us.
