Wimbledon London

Enjoy the sun in London

Think Wimbeldon and think strawberries and cream, quaint Engish tradition, umbrellas, and, of course, tennis! One of the most respected tennis competitions on the grand slam calendar got off to a sunny start on June 23rd, with hopefully much more of the same to come. Defending champions Roger Federer and Venus Williams return to the home of their multiple wins this year hoping to hold on to their trophies for yet another year. All eyes will be on centrecourt for the duration of the championship, particularly towards the end of the competition, but that's not to say that there won't be much to enjoy all throughout the tournament.

Most days have matches starting at 11am and continuing throughout the day. Tickets are still available, but only for those not afraid of rising early! Tennis fanatics have been known to queue overnight in order to get a chance of those elusive match-day tickets, and its advised not to come any later than 7am if you're interested in gaining entry to the matches themselves. Novertheless, the atmosphere remains one to be beaten and sports fans and novices alike have spent fantastic days under the sun watching the action on the outdoor hill at the venue formerly known as Henman Hill, after the recently retired, golden boy of English tennis, Tim Henman.

Definitely worth a trip if in London-take the District line tube to Wimbledon station-you'll be sure to enjoy the day, but be sure to bring that umbrella! Wimbledon's notorious for the sporadic outbursts of rain which bring play to an abrupt standstill, and the players aren't the only ones who suffer! Check out availability of our London hostels during the tournament, finishing July 6th.
