Fez, or Fes, is the capital of the Fès-Boulemane region and the second largest city in Morocco with a population of about 1 million people. Fez,also the former capital of Morocco, is one of the country's four “imperial cities”, the others being Rabat, Marrakech, and Meknes.

The Fes el Bali, the oldest walled part of Fez, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, wich is a place of special culture or physical significance. Fez is believed to be the largest contiguous car-free urban area in the world. Fez also has claim to the oldest continuously funtioning university in the world, founded in AD 859, the University of Al-Karaouine. The madrasa bas been and still is one of the leading spiritual and educational centers of the Muslim world.

Fez has a seasonal climate making it a great place to visit any time of the year! The summer months can be quite a scorcher but the cool nights easily balance out the warmer days.

Fez has many local traditional markets where travelers can find countless trinkets and souvenirs that will cost them next to nothing. Dont forget to try and work out a good deal! Bargining is normal among the local markets.

You cannot visit Fez without gazing upon the cities many famous munuments. These include the Bou Inania Madrasa, the Al-Attarine Madrasa, the Zaouia Moulay Idriss II shrine, the Dar al-Magana, and Aben Danan Synagogue.

A visit to Fez will fill you with humility and history. Depending on where you come from, traveling to Fez might feel like going back in time. Family, religion, and prayer are the main focuses here which is a refeshing change from many other cities in the world.
