Florence - A Piece of the Renaissance
The city like a piece of art itself... Florence is located on the River Arno and stands for plenty of years of history and beautiful creations of art, due to it's importance in the Middle Ages. Breeding ground of artists and famous figures - da Vinci, Michelangelo, Vespucci, Boticelli... just to mention a few names that have turned Florence into what it is today. The city is a magnet for tourists from all over the world and in 1982 it was declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO... Florence is a city brimming with history.
What to see? Florence's centre offers many architectural masterpieces and seems to be just like a kind of open air museum. Start off at Piazza della Signoria, which used to be Florence's political centre. Today it is popular amongst street artists and is home to the historical Caffé Gilli, Caffé Paskowski and Caffé delle Giubbe Ross. Here you will find the Palazzo Vecchio, which used to be the residence of the Medici and even did house the Parliament when Florence was the capital of Italy.
You absolutely have to go and visit Santa Maria del Fiore with its's beautiful dome. It is a gothic cathedral which was built on the remains of a church of the 7th century. As it is typical for Italian cities you will find quite many churches there. But with Florence being the cradle of the Renaissance you should at least visit a couple of them as they are beautiful masterpieces of art.
There are quite a few museums in Florence. The most famous one is probably the is the Uffizi Gallery. The must see's in there are “The Birth of Venus” by Boticelli, “ Madonna and Child with two Angels” by Filippino Lippi's or “Venus of Orbino” by Titian. Stop by Accademia di Belle Arti as well to see the famous creation of Michelangelo's - David.
Full of beautiful, Renaissance-style buildings, including wonderful churches and enormous palaces, Florence is steeped in culture and atmosphere taking the name of the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance. Don't forget to do the shopping (or just give a look at what the city shops offer to you). Label fans will find good bargains...
