A cultural spring is coming. Each year the Festival of Vienna (Wiener Festwochen) presents you theatre, music and dance productions arranged by famous artist from around the world. The content of the productions ranges from classical baroque concerts to modern dance and comical theatre performances. This year the festival will be taking place between the 14th of May and 20th of June, 2010. The festival is not only a mirror of the city’s enthusiasm for culture but also a great opportunity to experience and enjoy the openness towards other cultures and spheres.
When it all began? An exciting breeze of culture has been felt in Austria’s capital of culture and music every spring since 1951 when the Vienna Festival started. The Wiener Festwochen is now one of the world's leading cultural festivals and it is one of the major highpoints of Vienna’s annual cultural programme. As an innovative and international metropolitan festival, it offers a modern and multilingual program that covers the wide range of events, performances and shows. During the festival time Vienna turns into a city that never ceases to amaze.
The traditional inauguration of Wiener Festwochen, an open-air event with free admission, takes place annually in Vienna’s City Hall Square to kick off the festival. Robert Schumann and Gustav Mahler – the two composers on the programme of the opening concert! Try not to miss the inauguration of the year 2010 on the 14th of May! This year’s music programme is dedicated to the Viennese composer Alban Berg, as 2010 marks both his 125th birthday and the 75th anniversary of Berg’s death.
