International Ballet Festival: 15-25 of April, 2010

From 15th to 25th of April, 2010 the Mariinsky Theatre will be running its anniversary 10th International Ballet Festival – one of the highlights of the world's ballet season. Opened in 1860, Mariinsky became the preeminent music theatre of late 19th century Russia, where many of the stage masterpieces of Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and Rimsky-Korsakov received their premieres. The International Ballet Festival Mariinsky was launched in 2001. The Festival's aims to draw the stars of world ballet to Russia‘s cultural capital. In line with tradition, the festival will be opened with a premiere. The Ballet premiere is always an entertaining and challenging event. This year it will be Rodion Shchedrin’s ballet Anna Karenina with choreography by Alexei Ratmansky. Anna Karenina as a novel is commonly thought to explore the themes of hypocrisy, jealousy, faith, fidelity, family, desire and passion, and the agrarian connection to land in contrast to the lifestyles of the city. Furthermore, the festival organizers are promising to give the chance to see the performances by Alina Cojocaru (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden), David Hallberg and Daniil Simkin (American Ballet Theatre), Polina Semionova (Staatsballett Berlin), Mathieu Ganio (Opera de Paris), leading Bolshoi Theatre soloists Natalia Osipova, Svetlana Zakharova, Maria Alexandrova and Andrei Uvarov and lead Mariinsky Theatre Diana Vishneva, Ulyana Lopatkina, Alina Somova, Viktoria Teryoshkina, Yekaterina Kondaurova, Igor Zelensky, Leonid Sarafanov, Andrian Fadeyev and Vladimir Shklyarov.
