San Marcos Fair dates back to 1604 when a small indigenous Indian settlement, San Marcos, was founded within walking distance of the growing Spanish city of Aguascalientes. It is said that originally, San Marcos Fair was held during grape harvest season. One of the most important times of the year, when grapes go from the vine and start their journey into the wine barrels. The fair's origins, long forgotten, have given way to a lively, colorful three week spectacular, in which bullfights, folkloric dancing, mechanical games, cockfights, cultural events and merrymaking all compete for visitor's attentions.
Although the main celebrations are held in Aguascalientes (the city situated in the middle of Mexico), you can find the reflections of the festival all over the country. The festival provides a full of excitement, pageantry and cultural beauty. In most of the cities the stages are also set for public concerts and plays. Furthermore, you can find the street parties going around the towns. The most popular attractions are rodeos, cock fights and ox displays simply cannot be missed.
