Florence keeps an exceptional artistic heritage which is a marvellous evidence of its aged culture. Florence's centre offers many architectural masterpieces and seems to be just like a kind of open air museum. Start off at Piazza della Signoria, which used to be Florence's political centre. Today it is popular amongst street artists and is home to the historical Caffé Gilli, Caffé Paskowski and Caffé delle Giubbe Ross. It is also a unique outdoor sculpture gallery and a cultural centre of Florence. Here you will find the Palazzo Vecchio, which used to be the residence of the Medici and even did house the Parliament when Florence was the capital of Italy.
Palazzo Medici-Riccardi on Via Cavour was built for Cosimo I Vecchio by Michelozzo over 500 years ago and its famous classical Renaissance facade has served as a model for many other well-known Italian palaces. Palazzo Medici Riccardi has a particularly fascinating history, rich in art and also in political, cultural and worldly events. The palace was the residence of the powerful Medici family until 1540. The Florence was experiencing the golden age of the culture and arts at that time. Across the road there were constructed Medici Chapels, built to serve as mausoleums to this family, emphasizing their wealth and influence.
David is the most famous creation of Michelangelo created in the early 16th century. The most widely accepted interpretation is that the statue represents David immediately before his battle with Goliath, unlike previous depictions which portray the hero after his victory. The perfection of the physical details of David, reflect the studies of a young Michelangelo of anatomy on cadavers which was strictly forbidden at that time. It is a great art creation and probably the most famous sculpture in the world.
