Singapore International Film Festival is one of Asia's premier festivals, with more than 300 films on show from over 45 countries. Besides screening award-winning and critically-acclaimed films, the festival also features workshops, seminars and exhibitions on film-making for film students and the film industry. These events will be taking place between the 15th and the 24th of April, 2010 highlighting the best cinema from Asia, Europe, North America, Latin America and the Middle East. The festival aims to present and promote the current trends of world filmmaking industry.
The festival began in 1987 to provide a platform for non-mainstream cinema and now takes place at several venues in the city. Originally launched to give local audiences a chance to see independent and non-commercial films, the festival is now recognized worldwide by film critics. All the films introduced during the festival have English subtitles or are in English. The culmination of the festival is so called Silver Screen ceremony. During this ceremony the awards to the best Asian films and filmmakers are ditributed and the winners - honored.
