Holy Week in Seville: 28 of March - 4 of April, 2010

Seville, Spain

Religious events and festivals can be fun and entertaining. Holy Week in Seville is one of the most important traditional events of the city. It is celebrated in the week leading up to Easter, and is one of the better known religious events within whole Spain.During this week in Seville there are many processions that commemorate the Catholic traditions surrounding the death of Jesus Christ and the sadness experienced during that time. The week features the procession of pasos, floats of lifelike wooden sculptures of individual religious scenes.

The Holy week will be taking place between the 28th of March and 4th of April this year. This event has a lot of deep traditions and means a lot to the locals. For example, for the 'costaleros' who carry the floats it's a once in a lifetime honour to do so as the numbers wishing to be carriers. In addition, most of the brotherhoods or fraternities, dressed in penitential robes, process in penitence through the streets of the city, from their church to the Cathedral and back, taking the shortest possible routes.

Some of the processions are silent, with no musical accompaniment, some have a cappella choir or feature a drum and trumpet band. The origins of the Holy Week in Seville can be found in the late Middle Ages. Traditionally almost every procession includes an image of Christ as well as image of the Virgin Mary. All in all, it is surprisingly unique experience that includes a little bit of everything: history, religion, culture and entertainment.

Visitors from all over Spain and many foreigners are present in Seville during this event. The number of spectators may rise up to the impressing number of one million people during the most important moments of the Holy Week. Therefore, the city is preparing for this celebration as well. Hostels, restaurants, clubs and pubs are preparing to greet thousands of city guests. During this week, city turns into alternative energy center. Don't miss the chance to experience all of that.
