Ume (Asian plums) blossoms can be viewed from early February until March in Japan. The beauty of White or pink ume blossoms are widely observed in gardens, parks, shrines and temples, and more. One of the best festivals to celebrate this spring event - Mito Kairaku-en Plum Festival - is annually held in Tokyo. Between the 20th of February and 31st of March, 2010 you can enjoy this particular festival in most beautiful gardens in Japan.
The Japanese plum or ume has played an important role in Japanese culture for many centuries. The plum is associated with the start of spring. Japanese tradition holds that the Ume functions as a protective charm against evil. In addition, eating of the pickled fruit for breakfast is also supposed to stave off misfortune. Enjoy the flavour of the spring in Tokyo. There are about 25,000 resplendent Japanese apricot trees usually in full bloom on the day!
