Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is considered to be one of the greatest shows on Earth. Rio summer is at its peak, people, music, rhythm and floats from various samba schools - the event that simply cannot be missed. Carnival is scheduled to happen from 13th of February through 16th of February, 2010. Be prepared as city's streets will be crowded with visitors as the festival kicks off. The roots of Carnival trace back to the ancient Romans and Greeks who celebrated the rites of spring thousands years ago. The first festivals of Rio date back to 1723. Although Carnival is celebrated in most of Brazilian towns and villages and some other Catholic countries, Rio de Janeiro has long been regarded as the Carnival Capital of the World. The carnival parade is filled with people and floats from various samba schools that compete among each other. Samba schools work all year long to build the best floats and costumes to represent their themes, and to include the best music they can. Competition spirit will cover the city. Get in the move and get ready to join the vibrant city.
As the main and most popular parade is taking place in the Sambadrome and the balls are being held in the Copacabana Palace and beach, many of the carnival participants gather also in other locations. In the middle of February Rio carnival all over the city: in the streets, squares, bars, pubs and clubs. Venues are always taking over the city. In addition, don't miss the Street parties and festivals are very common during carnival and are highly populated by both tourists and the locals. The street events are usually starting to take place after the midday and they are ending in the late hours.
