The International Winter Festival (Arts Square) in St Petersburg has become an annual event since first held in December 1998. This year the festival is proud to present its 10th anniversary. The winter celebration is going to be opened on the 14th of December, 2009 in the Grand Philharmonic Hall. This year organizers present complete Brahms symphony and concerto cycle with Evgeny Kissin and Yefim Bronfman throughout the program of a festival.
The festival is literally held in the cultural oasis of St. Petersburg. The Ethnographic Museum, the St. Petersburg Philharmonia, the Mussorgsky Theatre and the State Russian Museum are all located all around the Arts square. During the month of December St. Petersburg is even called "the heart of classical music" to emphasized the importance and international level of this event. What is more, ballet performances cannot be missed, since St. Petersburg is proud to introduce one of the best ballet schools in the world.
In addition, the national-wide Russian Winter festival will be held to greet the winter holiday season. The festival historically cannot go without troika (sleighs) rides, along with other traditional Russian folk customs and games. Visitors will be able to sample a variety of local drinks and food, provided by street merchants. You will be impressed - St. Petersburg knows how to to showcase its beauty and hospitality well.
Take a chance to visit Peter the Great’s magnificent “Window on the West” and to see International Winter Festival. The complete program of Winter Festival Arts Square can be found at www.philharmonia.spb.ru. It is a unique approach to the history of Russia expressed by the sounds of classical music.
