On the 9th of November 2009 the world is celebrating one of the most important events in the recent history: 20 years since the fall of the Wall of Berlin. The Berlin Wall was the physical barrier separating the East Germany from the West Germany - The Eastern Europe from the Western World. The destruction of the wall symbolizes the fall of socialism.
The first concrete elements and large blocks of Berlin Wall were being put in place on August 15, 1961. Both: East and West German soldiers stood in front of it with orders to shoot anyone who attempted to destroy it or interrupt its construction process. After the construction works, the wall has become a barrier separating not only two political regimes, but also the same nation and families.
The 9th of November, 1989 is the date the Wall fell. In the days and weeks that followed the segments of wall were rapidly chipped away. Presently, not a lot of the Wall is remained at its original site. Many segments have been given to various institutions (universities, museums, governmental buildings) all around the world since its fall. Along the tourist areas of the city center, the German government has marked the location of the former wall by a row of cobblestones in the street.
All these events with the relation to the fall of Berlin Wall will be memorized during the main celebration - "Festival of Freedom" will be organized at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin from November 7 to 9, 2009. These anniversary celebrations include a wide range of special events and exhibitions that will be held in Berlin. Public concerts, street festivals and artistic performances symbolizing the Fall of the Wall cannot be missed. Come and be a part of the history!
