Bringing together two of Buenos Aires' most prominent passions, Palermo Fashion & Wines is a wonderful venture that takes place in the trendy young barrio of Palermo Viejo, at the junction of Armenia and Honduras streets. On the third Friday in each September, October and November, the boutiques and fashion shops along Armenia and Honduras individually represent a national winery (bodega) and throw open their doors for the public to browse their collections while sipping the featured wine of the night. The first night of the festivities focuses on Malbec, Argentina's pride and glory vine. Nearly abandoned in the1980s as part of a vine pull scheme, Malbec today is Argentina's most popular wine in production. Cabernet Sauvignon steals the spotlight on the second night. Despite its prominence in the industry, this grape is a relatively new variety which is a product of a chance crossing between Cabernet franc and Sauvignon blanc during the 17th century in France. These grapes have thick skins and their vines are hardy and resistant to rot and frost, thus increasing it's popularity through ease of cultivation. The final night is devoted to Merlot, white and sparkling wines. Merlot, although related genetically to Cabernet Sauvignon is not quite as resilient, but grows equally well in Argentina's fertile climate and topography. Palermo's Fashion and Wines event is relatively new, it's promoters hope to spread out to other barrios of the city in the near future. Recoleta Fashion & Wines in March, April and May has already been officially scheduled.
