The January Basho - Japans much loved national sport, sumo wrestling takes centre stage this month with the major event, The January Basho. From the 11th until the 25th January the Kokugikan Sumo Hall hosts the contest which is one of 6 annual grand events.
The sport requires two sumo wrestlers to battle eachother inside a four and a half metre circle. Points are scored each time a wrestler is thrown outside of the perimetre by the other contestant. There are many techniques needed to be learnt in order to master the sport and become a Yokuzana, a grand champion. The sport is held in high regard with age old traditions such as throwing salt over the floor before the contest begins.
Experience a part of Japanese culture and head along to this event. You must order your tickets early as they sell out quickly and the best seats in the house are extremely hard to come by.
