The Contemporary Culture Centre of Barcelona takes its turn at hosting the World Press Photo exhibition.
Regarded as the most important display of photojournalism in the world, the award-winning snaps appear at galleries and art centres at 80 cities world-wide.
Each year an independent international jury selects winners from photographs submitted by photojournalists, agencies, newspapers and photographers from all over the world.
Eleven competitive categories include news events, current affairs, sport, arts and entertainment, portraits and nature.
The World Press Photo of the Year 2007 was taken by British photographer Tim Hetherington for Vanity Fair and captures an American soldier in the Restrepo bunker of Korengal Valley, Afghanistan.
Others that made the final cut include Benzir Bhutto's assassination in Pakistan and pictures of political protestors in Zimbabwe and Kenya, as well as the unexpected moments of beauty offered up by sport, nature and daily life.
The festival's mission is to encourage high professional standards in photojournalism and to promote a free and unrestricted exchange of information.
World Press Photo aims to support professional press photography on a wide international scale. Promotional activities include an annual contest, exhibitions, the stimulation of photojournalism through educational programs, and creating greater visibility for press photography through a variety of publications.
