Loy Krathong Festival
Nov. 11-12 2008 Sukhothai Thailand
Thailand is featuring the magnificent Loy Krathong festival this weekend. Although the festivities span most of Asia, the largest celebrations will be in the Northern most province of Thailand known as “Sukhothai”. Held on the full moon of the twelfth lunar month, when the tide is high and the air is cool, millions from around the globe gather and observe the aquatic celebrations. Large floats, fireworks and cultural dancing are all part of what Thailand is advertising as the “Festival of the World”. There are many theories as to what the festival actually celebrates. Some wish to show gratitude to the goddess of the river “Mae Kong Kha” while some attend the festivities to worship Khongkla in order to avoid bad luck; Buddha's foot print is also mentioned. The city of Sukhothai, founded in the thirteenth century, is where the initial debut of classic Thai culture took place. There are no direct trains, and the bus trip from Bangkok is seven hours. Either way, the journey will be well worth the trouble.
