The Longest day of the Year
Norway 23rd June
Norway mightn't seem the most likely place for a barbecue on a summer evening, but think again! Each year on June 23rd the country celebrates Sankthans, the longest day of the year, which, in Norway, could last anything up to a few days! A pagan festival, Sankthans sees bonfires being lit all along the coast as a celebration to the pagan gods and a way of thanking tem from relief from the darkness of the winter months.
So where do you come in? It couldn't be simpler. Bring some food, a few drinks, and find a barbecue to join. Traditionally this is a night when the powers of the supernatural overcome the laws of the natural and the spirit world comes alive. Be prepared for sightings of elves, trolls, and talking trees-just some of the unique features of Sankthans!
For those looking for a bit more from Norway's most celebrated summer festival, how about renting a boat and taking in the view of the night from the sea, or even joining the more adventuour locals anchoring on tiny islands dotted around Norway's coast, for a more intimate celebration. Either way, the laid back Norwegian attitude to life comes to the fore next Monday, and is sure to be another magical festival day.
Why not check out or Norwegian hostels for availability for this weekend and next week? Get there early, it's sure to be busy!
