Luang Prabang is located at the confluence of the Nam Khan and Mekong River and was formerly the capital of a kingdom of Laos.
The old town centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Explore this beautiful town by foot to see the amazing heritage buildings now used by businesses such as hotels, restaurants, cafes. There are absolutely no modern buildings or anything above 2 floors in this unique town.
There are 30 or more Temples, Wats. The most popular is the Wat Mai. Wat Xieng Thong or Temple of the Golden City is one of the oldest temples. You can see unique architecture temple which look amazingly beautiful.
The Royal Palace, built during French colonization, was converted into a museum of ancient art and important artifacts.
There are 2-3 markets around Luang Prabang, the most popular is the daily night market. It is filled with lots of craft and silverware.
Baguettes and croissants, spicy soup, sticky rice and meat-based dishes are popular food to try in Outstanding Luang Prabang. Make sure to get a local Lao Coffee which is reputed to be one of the best in the world.
The large hill in the Outstanding Luang Prabang is known as Phou Si or "Holy Mountain". It brings amazing views and offers beautiful sunrise and sunset.
Kuang Si Waterfalls are one of the most popular attractions of Luang Prabang. The tourists enjoy the natural landscapes. The Tad Sae Waterfalls are stunning, they are located in a park outside of town.
The Pak Ou Caves, Buddha Caves, is a must-visit. It is located in limestone cliffs above the Mekong River. Thousands of Buddha statues are placed inside the caves.
On the way, stop at the Ban Xang Hai village and try the local whiskey, Lao Lao. It is made with all sorts of snakes and insects mixed.
The Elephant Park Project Area is located about 15 km out of town and in the middle of a mountainous surrounding. It will lead you out into a local Kamu village where you get to observe the daily life and culture of this ethnic minority.
