Thanksgiving, beautiful family time
North American tradition
Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday celebrated in the United States as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, this year on thursday 26th. Several other places around the world observe similar celebrations.
Thanksgiving has its historical roots in religious and cultural traditions. Most families follow traditions begun on the first Thanksgiving, but many have their own traditions that they follow each year. It is a day for Americans to come together around the table.
One of the best things about Thanksgiving is spending beautiful time with family. Many people live far from family members and travel long distances by car, train, or plane to be with their loved ones. Thanksgiving is the busiest travel day of the year!
The traditional stuffed turkey is part of every dinner table during the feast. Pumpkin pie, Cranberry sauce, Corns are some of the dishes cooked everywhere to mark the day. Even so historians don't have an evidence to prove that turkey was eaten during the first Thanksgiving dinner, it would be incomplete without it.
Some families include breaking the turkey's wishbone as part of their celebration. Two people each take one end of the bone, make a wish, and pull. Whoever ends up with the larger part of the bone gets their wish!
The traditional Thanksgiving parade probably started with President Lincoln proclaiming it an official day. The full-dress parade is a way to display the country's military strength and discipline. Nowadays, parades are accompanied with musical shows and celebrities.
Watching NFL football during Thanksgiving is a popular tradition too.
