Lisbon is the capital and the largest city of Portugal. It is continental Europe's westernmost capital city. It is one of the oldest cities in the world.
Lisbon has the warmest winters in Europe, 15 degrees celsius average from December to February and the summer season lasts about six months.
Lisbon offers all you expect from Portugal: gothic cathedrals (Santa Catarina Church), monasteries and museums such as the Calouste Gulbenkian, are all part of the colourful city without forgetting the St. George's castle.
But the true pleasure of discovery is in the lovely narrow streets of Lisbon. In the district of Bairro Alto, you will find many restaurants and bars with jazz, reggae, electronica. Nightclubs appears scattered all over town, using any old spaces, even riverside docks.
Graca is one of the most popular districts in Lisbon and has one of the best views of the city. Take an afternoon to walk around this neighbourhood, and admire the sunset at the Monte Agudo viewpoint.
You should visit the lovely Amoreiras garden where on Fridays you can listen to live music, eat fine pastry and drink good refreshments.
You might prefer to sit in one of the 1930s-era cafes or walk along the seaside that once saw return of the explorer Vasco da Gama.
The Jeronimos monastery hold his resting place, a church built in the 1500s.
The Belem tower, the city's icon is also a symbol of this Age of Discovery. the watchtower has been declared a World Heritage monument by Unesco.
If you want to see what the gold found in colonial Brazil was able to pay, visit the world most expensive chapel. The Chapel of St. John the Baptist is a European masterpiece. Its mosaics were made in Rome for this Lisbon church.
Spend a Sunday at the Lx Market, exploring the different shops and stalls on the street. It is one of the trendiest places in Lisbon and it is mainly frequented by the locals.
