Chilean capital Santiago
One of the most important Christian cities in the world, Santiago de Compostela is the place where St James, one of the apostles of Christ is buried. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its old cathedral and centre, plus, Santiago has the University of Santiago de Compostela, one of the oldest in Spain, being a centre of the academic life in the country.
The cathedral is located in the Plaza do Obradoiro, and it's the final destination of the ways of St James. The cathedral has more than thousand years and about ten thousand square meters, divided in spaces, chapels and corridors. But what brings people from all over the world, are the relics of St James, located inside the cathedral.
In the Praza do Obradoiro is the kilometre zero of the Way of St James, and this is the heart of the city. Around the square, you can see many buildings with different architecture styles. In the Way of St James, which begins in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France, the pilgrim, as it's said, will have his sins forgiven, during this pilgrimage and other two. The relics of St James are believed to come to Santiago by boat from Jerusalem and carried inland to where they were found.
In the cathedral museum displays the cathedral history, archaeological remains of firsts basilicas, sculptures from the cathedral, library and tapestry collection. The museum is open from 10am. If you are a Christian, or a person interested, Santiago de Compostela is an important place to go, discover and explore.
