Natural History in Rochelle
La Rochelle is a 1000 year old city situated on the west coast of France. A couple of centuries after it was discovered, it expanded greatly in the salt and wine trades meaning that good wine is everywhere!
The maritime character of the city will captivate you for days; it has many ports which have made their name known by their intake of local produce, for example the fishing port of Chef de Baie where there a regular fish markets in the mornings. This, along with the other ports, the summer months, La Rochelle reaches around 30 degrees and combined with its open water, makes it very popular with those keen on water sports.
La Rochelle's Natural History Museum is very popular and gives an insight into the city's past in exploration. Its mixture of grand, stately homes, secret roads of arcades, and old wooden houses provides La Rochelle with character and interest.
A popular method of exploring the city is by bike; there are many places that you can hire a bike if you don't have your own, but it gives you the freedom to see La Rochelle in your own time and leisure. It also gives you the opportunity to discover the parks and gardens of the city - places that the cars can't reach!
Finally, you cannot visit this exquisite city without visiting the Rue de Parais; this arcade is full of small, often one off boutiques selling things from clothes to the most delectable cakes and sweets.
