White Nights

The sun never lets the sky go dark

The white nights in Saint Petersburg is not unique to them, there is no other northern city who have received such poetic and literary acclaim. No other major European city can rival this experience nor the atmosphere on the streets of St. Petersburg during the summer months - lively, friendly, romantic and bustling with people throughout the night as well as the day!

The nights are bright in the period from late May to early July, with the brightest period normally from 11th of June until 2nd of July. In Russian called Beliye Nochi are a curious phenomenon caused by St. Petersburg's very northerly geographical location - at 59 degrees 57' North.

St Petersburg is the world's most northern city with a population over 1 million, and its stands at such a high latitude that the sun does not descend below the horizon enough for the sky to grow dark. In fact night becomes curiously indistinguishable from day, so much so that the authorities never need to turn the city's streetlights on.

There are many tourists enjoying the period in never ending light , imagine what can be more romantic than a walk along the banks of the city's rivers and canals in almost broad daylight, no matter what the time of day? You can see a people of all ages throughout the night, watching street entertainers or simply enjoying social gatherings in the abundant of outside bars, there is amazing atmosphere that you can not see in any other city.

Around 2am spectators gather at the river Neva's embankment to watch the raising of the various drawbridges allowing huge barges and tankers access.

But dont think that only White nights attract the tourists, in winter time there are so-called White Days full of snow and very cold!
