Sziget is one of Europe's biggest music festivals attracting thousands upon thousands of people from all corners of the world. It is one of the most multicultural parties held in europe with countless international performances spanning all genres of music.
The annual festival is held in August in Budapest, the capital of Hungary on Obudai-sziget island on the Danube River. Obudai-sziget means “Old-Buda Island†which is a 266 acre leafy island that hosts more than 1000 performances a year.
The popularity of the week-long festival has grown drastically over its 18 years existence. Each year, Sziget attendancy rates surpasses the year before. The Sziget hit its all-time peak in attendancy in 2009 with over 390,000 visitors.
Originally a low-profile student event, it become one of Europe's difinitive rock festivals by the late 1990's. The second Sziget Festival, held in 1994, was labeled “Eurowoodstock†and was even headlined by performers from the original Woodstock. There is also a dedicated “party train†service that transports party-goers from Western Europe. The Sziget Festival is now being increasingly labeled as the European version to the Burning Man festival thanks to its unique musical features.
Sziget is a great oportunity to immerse yourself into the European festival scene while experiencing multiple cultures. It is an event that reaches beyond langauge and nationality and brings everyone together for the same reason: for love of the music.
