Bangkok: The City of Angels
Fashion, arts, politics and entertainment.
Bangkok is the capital city of Thailand and the largest urban area in the country. Known in Thai as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon meaning “city of angels” for short. The traditional Thai name for Bangkok is over 20 words long and holds the Guinnes Book of World Records for the longest name of a place.
Bangkok is split into seperate areas of land by the Chao Phraya River, which is the longest river in Thailand. Bangkok is thus constructed by a large number of canals which gives it its second nick-name: “Venice of the East”. Bangkok was ranked the best city in the world in 2008 according to Travel Leisure Magazine.
Bangkok's best feature is its mix of worlds. Theres a strong modern influence that coexists with the modest traditional life of Thailand. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations and for good reason. Theres a blend of Thai, Chinese, Indian, Buddhist, Muslim, and Western culture represented.
There's something for everyone in Bangkok, from four-star hotels to Siamese open air markets, chic night clubs to ancient temples and shrines. One moment you could be shopping at a luxury mall and the next eating grilled chicken from a streetside barbecue. The City is vibing with fashion, arts, politics, education and especially enetertainment. One of Bangkok's most infamous installments is the notoriuos Red Light District. Known around the world for its prostitution and girlie bars.
Bangkok has several festivals and national events. The Bangkok Songkran Festival is held every April from the 13th-15th which is the traditional Thai New Year. Its an occasion for celebration all over the city but most notably at Sanam Luang near the Grand Palace. Other events include the Royal Ploughing Ceremony, The Queen's Birthday Celebration, Trooping of the Colours, and The King's Birthday Celebration.
Bangkok is by far one of, if not the most colorful cities in the world. It's overflowing with rich, diverse culture that is in a league of its own.
