The Calgary Stampede: 9 - 18 of July, 2010
Why it is worth visiting Canada in July? Because this month is presenting you one of the best events in the whole world. The Calgary Stampede is an annual rodeo, exhibition and festival held every July in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The ten-day event, which bills itself as The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, attracts over one million visitors per year and features the world's largest rodeo, a parade, midway, stage shows, concerts, agricultural competitions, chuckwagon racing and First Nations exhibitions. Be there between the 9th and the 18th of July, 2010.
The Calgary and District Agricultural Society was formed in 1884 to promote the town and encourage farmers and ranchers from eastern Canada to move west. The exhibition grew annually, and in 1908, the Government of Canada announced that Calgary would host the federally funded Dominion Exhibition that year. The modern event transforms the city into town celebrating the cowboy culture. Visitors will enjoy the atmosphere and always friendly attitude of the locals. This unique experience cannot be missed.
Rodeo is a sport which arose out of the working practices of cattle herding in Spain, Mexico, and later the United States, Canada, South America and Australia. Some people believe that he Calgary Stampede, like all rodeos, is a cruel spectacle of animal abuse. Fear, pain and stress are used to coerce animals into performing for the entertainment of human beings – a barbaric concept. Yet here in Canada, in the 21st century, we offer this as a tourist attraction and as a symbol of our culture.
Calgary is a vibrant city that offers the best of both worlds - a cosmopolitan metropolis of over one million. With a wealth of cultural attractions, award-winning cuisine, parks and pathways, specialty shops and hip night spots, plus outdoor activities such as golfing and hiking, fishing and mountain biking, skiing and dog-sledding - there's something for everyone. There is no doubt that Calgary is a city that provides a lot of fun and excitement.
