Chinese New Year

Shanghai Hostels and Hotels

The Chinese New Year has become something of a universal celebration. From the 26th of January until the 9th of February Chinese communities around the world take part in welcoming in the new year. Also known as the Chinese Spring Festival, this is an event that brings together many cultures to experience the various aspects of Chinese tradition in this year 2009 which is the year of the Ox.

The festivities include marking the new year with friends and families visiting eachother. Throughout the celebrations there are martial arts and drum demonstrations as well as many traditional Chinese foods available such as the ever popular dumplings.

On the 9th of February, the last day of the festival, the lantern festival begins. Traditional red lanterns adorn the streets, new clothing in red is the predominant colour worn by many and of course there is a spectacular fireworks display to mark the beginning of the year!
